So, what's the deal with...

I notice there are times, I will have the very last comment left on someone's blog.

What's the deal with that?

Is it because my comment is so brilliant, no one can follow it up?

Have I stopped people dead in their tracks, because what I've said makes no sense?

Have I offended the sensibilities of the 25 other commentors?

No, really, I want to know. This is a bizarre phenomenon. And it's happened too many times to just be a coincidence.

Now, it's no secret that I think I'm hysterical. (Remember, if I'm going to spend time here inside my head, I may as well enjoy it). So, if the problem is that no one can keep up with my sense of humor, this I can understand.

But more brilliant than the other commentors? C'mon...even I know that's not true.

Making no sense to the other commentors? Well, yeah, that's a good possibility.

And what's the deal with commenting for the first time on someone's blog and getting no response? Not even a "hey", or "hi", or "welcome", or "my God, you're sick!"

NOTHING, NADA, BUPKIS. This has happened to me more times than I care to mention. Do I take it personally? Should I take it personally? What is the protocol for responding to new commentors?

Once in a while, a commentor comes along that is completely inappropriate, and then you have a whole other problem on your hands. Do you acknowledge that person? Do you encourage them? Do you delete them?

I think a blog is very personal; a part of you; an extension of you, if you will. It can be very violating when someone attacks you on your own blog.

I won't stand for it. I wouldn't stand for it in person, and won't stand for it on my blog.
Even though it's public, it is still MINE.

So, please, comment...say your peace, be funny, witty, intelligent, whatever. But if you can't be nice...then be prepared to be deleted.

And hey, if it makes you feel any better...If you're the last comment here, it probably means you were brilliant!

I suffer from a severe problem, Dr. Crusin-Mom. I like to be both the FIRST and LAST commenter on a post. What's up with that?

But "nasty" is not in my vocabulary, at least not my blog vocabulary. *If* I were nasty -- fat chance of that! -- I give you my blessings to delete my comments. I give my blessings for you to delete any and all nasty, uncalled-for and inappropriate comments on your posts, for that matter. It's *your* backyard after all...we're only here to play in it.

There are times, as the host, to not always have to have the last word, especially when the last person who just commented did say something very witty or brilliant, BUT, I think it's very rude to continually ignore a person's comments if they not being rude or inappropriate.

There are many bloggers who I like to read, but have stopped or have not read that often anymore, for that reason. It's just makes you feel like an unwelcome guest.

Hey Pearl, you changed your picture.

ST, you're right re. ignoring people's comments being rude. I sometimes just plain forget to comment, so caught up am I just in the fact that I got comments.

And yes, I changed the pic. I was gonna back off blogging, so I had to find something related to capture my interest. You think it works with my blog's name?

It happens to me all the time! Of course, I'm usually reading a day or so behind...

I sometimes don't respond to follow-up comments, because there's simply nothing to say. If it's a new commenter, I try to thank them for coming. Certain posts, I won't respond for a bit as I want to hear more people's thoughts before getting involved in the discussion myself. Then there's simply the comments I don't see: Posts that are a few days old generally get relegated to a place where I don't see them, and the Blogger option to forward comments only forwards some of them.

Pearl, you don't usually ignore people's comments. I think Ezzie is correct in the reasons he gave why people may not always respond. I do the same thing.

But what I am referring to are people who will either respond to almost everyone else on the page, or totally ignores you when you are either the only one or one of a few, who commented on their post.

I guess calling it rude is a little harsh, since it's the individual's prerogative to do so, but it sure doesn't make someone feel welcome.

I know! What is commenting protocol? Ms. Manners didn't write anything about this shit! Well, for the inappropriate ones, I try to ignore them. I had one last week that freaked me out a bit. I usually go to the blogs of new folks to see what interests them. I guess I've never said hi or welcome, but that's a great idea. (I usually write a new comment acknowledging, though) I never said welcome to you SO... hi & welcome! Oh, wrong venue, but you get the point. I do like reading your stuff -- so I'm glad we found each other.

And I think you're funny!

T.P.: commenting first and last just means you're brilliant and witty.

S.T.: I ditto all you say. And what I think is fun about comments, is when the commentors converse with eachother!

Ezzie: I think I may have you hooked over here!

Wendy: you made me feel very welcome...not to worry. Anyway, you are the only other person in the world who liked Joe VS. The Volcano, that makes you great in my book!

I just always try and comment when I visit someone... if they took the time to write up a big, beautiful, funny, brilliant post, then I can take the time to make a short, snazzy comment. That's being appreciative of another's work! Sometimes I'm last because I'm late in getting to the blog- like right now. I do like to be first sometimes too! And I always (I think I can safely say that) respond to first time commenters! If I get a new visitor, I am eternally grateful.

RCJ: you wrote the book on blogging etiquette...you always have something encouraging to say, thanks!

say your peace

Peace! (or did you mean piece?)

My problem is that I comment on several blogs and have to remember which posts to check back on to see if there was any response (which too often there's not :( ). Oh, well. I feel your pain.

cruisin-mom said...

Hi Ayelet: Thanks for stopping by! (how was that? polite?!) I see your name and comments around the blogosphere. I notice you love When Harry Met Sally, too! Thanks for stating your "piece". Hope you come back to see that I answered you!

Aw, geez. I seem to find myself in a blogging faux-pas. I am sorry if I have offended you. I love to read your blog, and do appreciate the comments you've left on mine.

Trying to come up with a line to kill the conversation.

Funny, it usually works in real life...

P.T.: well, seeing as you are the last comment, I think you've succeeded.
