Jelly Bellys

I suppose it's no secret by now, that I love candy, icecream, and, well, just about anything sweet.

But, (in my humble opinion) there is no candy quite as perfect as JELLY BELLYS.

For a bit of history about Jelly Belly's you can read here.

Jelly Belly's even made it all the way into space on the shuttle carrying the first female astronaut, Sally Ride. (who, by the way, grew up in the San Fernando Valley...who said a valley girl couldn't amount to much?).

What is it that makes the jelly belly so perfect?

Let's discuss:

First of all, they are FAT FREE. Yep, you heard me right...let's say it together: FAT FREE.

Secondly, they are only 4 calories each. YAHOO!

Thirdly, what other candy comes in 50 different flavors? NONE

And, there are recipes for mixing flavors to acquire a delectable taste sensation.

Fourthly, for all of my kosher readers, get this: THEY ARE KOSHER! oy vey.

They are perfect for parties, adding just the right amount of color to any hostess's table.

Why, it was even good enough for one of our greatest actors of the 20th century (oops, I mean President of the United States).

I can't remember exactly when I tried my first Jelly Belly...I'm guessing it was in the early 80's.

I quickly became hooked. In fact, if all that was left to eat in the world were Jelly Belly's (and In and Out Burger of course) I would be quite satisfied.

If the world ended tomorrow, I believe this quote I once heard, sums it all up:

"After a nuclear holocaust, all that will be left are cockroaches and Cher".

I would like to add, and Jelly Belly's.

LOL!!!!
I would imagine that Mon in the desert was like jelly bellys- every flavour in pint size packages.
I don't think cockroaches would be nearly as tasty.

Candy lover? Did you get a chance to drop into Munchies while you were on my side of town? Good stuff.

You forgot to mention that you can mix those 50 flavors for all kinds of tasty cocktails.

My dream is to someday tour the jelly belly factory.

I, too, love them, but they are rather expensive little candies, at least by the time they make it to Canada.

Maybe we can invent some cheaper knockoffs; we'll name them something like Tummy Ticklers, or Belly Buttons, or Tummy Yummies.

First flavor we must invent will simply be called PURPLE. (some flavor combo of grape and lavender.)

I don't believe it - did you know Jelly Bellys are my FAVORITE candy? I would take them over chocolate cake. Seriously. I don't have a huge sweet tooth, but I love candy, and Jelly Belly is my absolute favorite. I literally bought a pound and a half of them just YESTERDAY on our way home from our trip! We found a store at a rest stop that carries all 50 flavors!!!! And my favorite flavor (Margarita) is hard to find, so I bought an entire pound of Margarita Jelly Bellies and half a pound of a mix of all my other favorites (let's see . . . buttered popcorn, toasted marshmallow, pear, peach, cantaloupe, buttered toast, peanut butter . . .). This is too funny! I had no idea we had so much in common . . . too bad I don't live anywhere near you; actually maybe it is good - we might get fat together if we lived closer :-)

ps: Ralphie: go to the Jelly Belly website; the factory is in California (Fairfield) and you can take a tour!

kasamba: perhaps we could chocolate cover those cockroaches.

ralphie: Never been to Munchies. Good friends of mine toured the Jelly Belly Factory in Northern Calif. They brought me back jelly belly socks. It's my dream too to tour the factory. They give lot's of samples!

Mia: I must say, i'm very select with my flavors.

T.P.: they aren't cheap here either, but worth every penny...tummy ticklers? hmmmm, sounds yummy

E.K.: I am soooo not surprised that we have that in common. THat is hysterical that you stopped and bought all those...you are a girl after my own heart.

Have you ever tried the Harry Potter Jelly Belly Bertie Bott's 10 Flavor Assortment?

The amazing thing is that the various gross flavors actually really taste like they should. Not that any one who reads this blog would know what BOOGER, DIRT, EARWAX or EARTHWORM would taste like of course. We all have certainly tried SARDINE or SPINACH before, and everyone loves VOMIT (my personal favorite).

Yes, these are for real. And yes, I have tried them all...

Yup, love them Jelly Bellies!

cruisin-mom said...

jack: Of course a valley boy would love J.B.'s :)

Wanderer: Yay...You're still around! Okay, so I've tasted Booger, but just can't bring myself to try Vomit.

I always loved how they not only had remarkable flavors in their own right - they also came with recipes (mix one x + 1 y and get red velvet cake) for the truly adventurous...

but oh man, first Jack with salt water taffy and now this - you guys are killing me

To pick up on a minor point, I fervently believe that In & Out Burger serves the finest manifestation of cow on this planet, and it's probably the thing I miss most with keeping kosher. I have frequently fantasized that a kosher In & Out (no cheese, kosher meet, no milkshakes) would make a gazillion dollars anywhere near Pico/Robertson.

I must say, I do have a sweet tooth too.
When I go shopping I quite often buy jelly beans - for the children of course!
;)

Stepima, Jack: it was your salt water taffy post that actually inspired me to write about jelly bellies :)

HOH: I love chocolate too, but J.B.'s...there's just something about those little suckers.

Doc: So? Open one!!!

Baleboosteh: my kids are too old, can't use that excuse anymore (oops,I mean reason)

recently i had a bunch of em - my kids got it from relatives in the sates....they are the best - and as you say - kosher!!!!!
the hard part is, you have to remember which ones you tasted - the green with the pink dots, the yellow with the brown dots, the light green with the light brown dots..
root beer's my fave.

I love the Harry Potter Jelly Belly's, especially when giving them to nonsuspicious individuals.

Head over Heels, boy did I have to reread your comment a few times. Time to get my mind out of the gutter.

cruisin-mom said...

towik: Root beer is my favorite too!

Neil: have you been spying on me?

S.T.: the Harry Potter's are just plain gross.
I also had to read HOH twice...guess my head is laying in the same gutter.

Love the colors. I am strange I never liked jelly beans. I can appreciate the pretty colors:).

cruisin-mom said...

T.P.: uh, excuse me, what, am I chopped liver?

SWFM: forgive me, but jelly beans are no jelly bellies...not even close. Just ask anyone who is a jelly belly lover.

torontopearl said...

Well, all righty, then. It's a date: You AND Ralphie can tour the Jelly Belly factory together -- either in person, or at your own computer monitors.

BTW, I think we can work Jelly Bellies into everyday language. How's about "A Jelly Belly (tm) for your thoughts...!" Boy, you'd be releasing those thoughts into the wild just for the reward of a few JBs!

Be very jealous - we live less thaat a half hour away from THE Jelly Belly Factory.

Randi,
In these times of political-military crisis, I just wanted to thank you for bringing the world some of the joys of Jelly Belly appreciation.
I wish Operation Summer Rains would rain down whole payloads of them on Gaza. I a suicide bomber stuffed their homemade devices with them. I wish a massive glass jar of them were the prize for winning the World Cup. I wish... I wish I had one right now.
Reading your blog makes me wish sometimes I grew up in the Valley.

cruisin-mom said...

jmk2006: the amount of response I've gotten to this post is funny, isn't it? After I posted it, I thought, people are busy posting about the political ills of the world, things that are important and meaningful. And here I am talking about jelly belly's. But from the response, and from your comment...maybe in the midst of all our world's problems, it's important to remember the simple pleasures as well.
Re: growing up in the valley...the valley in the 1960's was great. I suppose many of us idealize where we grew up (or some hate it)...but for me, ages 5-10, were really some great years.

socialworker/frustrated mom said...

Ok then I have to try it to prove you wrong lol.

cruisin-mom said...

SWFM: go for it! you won't be disappointed.

... Is the Window to Our Soul said...

SWFM - Cruisin Mom is absolutely right... I don't like jelly beans either, but Jelly Bellys AREN'T Jelly Beans. They are awesome especially since the flavors are so real.

btw, CM, since it seems that I have gotten in the habit of posting songs I am listening to while commenting to your posts, thought I would share....

I Got the Sun in the Morning and the Moon at Night - boy AOL Radio is fantastic!

cruisin-mom said...

S.T.: Love that song...let's hear it for showtunes, lavendar and jelly bellies...what could be better?!

socialworker/frustrated mom said...

Okay I must try them then. I will let you know!

We had the CEO of Jelly Belly on my show about 2 years ago. He was great; even telling us the one flavor that tanked the most in the history of the company: pumpkin pie. That was the kind of honesty you usually don't get from a CEO who's still working.

cruisin-mom said...

Jake: great story...I hope he brought samples!
